The Gospel of Steve K.

Written by Steve Keicher*

So, according to some, 2016 sucked. Maybe it did, maybe it didn’t. If you were a set of speakers or ear buds, it definitely didn’t. An ungodly amount of new music was released over the last 12 months, some of it coming from our fine city itself! Here’s a list of some of my favorite albums from 2016, in no particular order:

Megadeth- Dystopia  (Razor sharp production, killer song writing as always and Dave just keeps surrounding himself with top notch players.)

Venomous Concept- Kick Me Silly (Short, grindy blasts of chaotic energy. Features members of Brutal Truth and Napalm Death!)

Ghostlimb – Difficult Loves Grimey (noisy hardcore not unlike Converge. Maybe a little more punk leaning…)

Rotten Sound – Abuse To Suffer (These grindcore sweethearts return after a 5 year wait since their last record. It’s out on Season of Mist.)

Child Bite – Negative Noise (Maybe you saw these guys open for Down at the Town Ballroom? Spastic and weird, could be a tough listen for some. Take the challenge, you’ll be rewarded! 10 year scene vets from Detroit.)

Deftones – Gore (The band is a top 3 favorite of all time for me. Whether you’re fighting or fucking, there’s always Deftones songs to fit the mood. Or set the mood. This latest release is no different. No complaints ever.)

Aborted – Retrogore (An undeniably heavy band that sneaks the melody in while nobody is watching. Critically acclaimed death metal, scope it!)

WRONG – self titled (High energy noise rock from Miami. Dropped this album on Relapse so you know it’s heavy in its own unique way.)

Architects – All Our God’s Have Abandoned Us (A favorite UK import. Once, more of a noisy hardcore unit, the band can almost be called technical metalcore if you want to get picky. Heavy, melodic and catchy as fuck!)

Gojira- Magma (A thick slab of French metal. These dudes write songs about the Earth, Lava, whales and other shit that matters. Music with message, are you hearing it?)

Despised Icon- Beast (The title says it all. French-Canadian deathcore complete with pig squeals, blast beats and breakdowns. Back at it after all these years and I’m loving it.)

Twelve Foot Ninja – Outlier (A hybrid of sorts. This Australian unit blends metal, djent, reggae, cabaret and other styles to form their sound. May look like too much on paper but it works. Earworms for days. Often compared to Faith No More, Mr. Bungle and early Incubus.)

Candiria – While They Were Sleeping (Another fusion band of sorts. More avant-garde with a killer combo of metal, jazz, hip hop and ambient passages. Their Metal Blade debut after being out of the game for a bit.)

Car Bomb – Meta (Forward thinking heavy from Brooklyn. Super odd time signatures, fast and slow heavy. Weird heavy with some underlying melody that doesn’t distract.)

Protest The Hero – Pacific Myth (This collection of singles finally gets compiled and released properly. Call it what you want: progressive metal, metal core, technical progressive metalcore… I’m just going to call it great.)

Zao – The Well Intentioned Virus (Christian metalcore that will make you say “Yeah right!” For real though, heavy comes from all walks of life. They’ve probably been doing it longer than you’ve been alive. Evil heavy!)

The first quarter of 2017 looks promising as far as new releases are concerned too! Save some holiday money and gift cards for these:

Code Orange – Forever

Aversions Crown – Xenocide

Horisont – About Time

Lorna Shore – Flesh Coffin

Power Trip – Nightmare Logic

Darkest Hour – Godless Prophets and The Migrant Flora

New GOVT release: 2017! Sorry, had to!
