I am just brimming with joy to bring to you this review today, of this incredible debut album from a self-proclaimed “post-whatever” metal band from Paris, France. It was actually released at the beginning of December of 2019. It’s no surprise that I missed it, because I often don’t find these amazing underground releases until they’re a few years old. Had I heard it, I’m sure it would have been included on my best albums of the year feature. Luckily, these guys sought me out themselves and put this incredible work of art in my hands (figuratively) and asked for a review.
I don’t even know where to begin with what I love about this release. This is an incredibly ambitious debut. Pulling influence from all over the spectrum of heavy music and beyond, they really are difficult to categorize. And that’s my favorite kind of music! Progressive, heavy, melodic, jazzy, and damn catchy, this album had me switching from dancing to headbanging periodically. Never a dull moment on this album.
One thing that stands out to me right away is the incredible production and mix – I love a mix that puts the bass right out front like this one does. It’s not too polished and a little dirty even, which works really well with the whole feel of this album. The drums somewhere between wet and dry… dare I say moist? The snare… incredible! Everything is really well balanced and it has a really organic sound.
Each song is it’s own little sonic adventure, complete with its own identity and yet there is some kind of cohesion that ties the whole album together. The composition is tasteful, never repeating a riff too often, and always keeping you engaged and on your toes with surprising twists and turns. It’s difficult to choose a favorite, but if I had to choose I’d say Return, with it’s emotional vocal delivery and dynamic movements.
I whole-heartedly loved listening to this album, and it’s one that will easily become a favorite. I’ve already sent it directly to at least 5 people I knew would dig it. And that I think is one of the highest compliments I can give an album. I am absolutely looking forward to hearing more from this band. I hope this article inspires you to check them out as well!
Find this album on their bandcamp, follow them on instagram, and give them a like on Facebook as well!
